Digos City, Davao del Sur – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with Cor Jesu College, officially kicked off the 2025 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) on August 13–14, 2025 at the CJC Gymnasium, Sacred Heart Avenue, Digos City.
Anchored on the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan” and guided by the vision of “Building Smart and Sustainable Communities,” this year’s celebration highlighted the role of science, technology, and innovation in creating a more resilient and progressive future.
The event opened with welcome remarks from Ms. Leslie Pearl M. Cancio-Dy, Provincial S&T Director of DOST XI PSTO Davao del Sur, who emphasized the importance of local partnerships in advancing science and technology for inclusive growth.
Day 1 featured notable speakers from diverse fields:
Ms. Leah G. Mayol-Sumalinog, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST XI PSTO Davao del Sur, who discussed the importance of research and innovation in regional development.
Dr. Cinmayii G. Manliguez, Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Mindanao, who shared insights on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, particularly its applications in education, research, and everyday problem-solving.
Mr. Bernard A. Beduya, Special Science Teacher IV of the Philippine Science High School – Southern Mindanao Campus, who introduced participants to Robotics and its potential to inspire innovation among the youth.
Engr. Jamie E. Rosal, faculty member of Cor Jesu College’s College of Engineering, who highlighted Innovations in Engineering and their contributions to sustainable development.
Day 2 continued with sessions from various government agencies, focusing on Smart Cities and Communities:
Mr. Jovanie Dasilgo of the Department of the Interior and Local Government XI (DILG XI) presented the agency’s programs and projects aimed at building smarter and more sustainable local communities.
Engr. Virgil A. Fuentes, ITO I – Provincial Officer of the Department of Information and Communication Technology XI (DICT XI), Davao del Sur, discussed the DICT’s initiatives in digital transformation and smart city development.
Engr. Eric John B. Miones, Science Research Specialist II of the DOST XI – ReDID, shared the department’s current projects and innovations to support the growth of smart and sustainable communities.
In addition to the plenary talks, the RSTW also featured booths and stations from various schools and institutions, each showcasing innovative products and works in the fields of agriculture and technology. These exhibits gave participants, especially students, the opportunity to witness how science and technology can be applied in practical and community-centered ways.
An open forum encouraged active dialogue between speakers and participants, while an evaluation session capped the program to ensure continuous improvement of future RSTW celebrations.
The 2025 RSTW in Davao del Sur not only served as a platform for knowledge-sharing but also as an avenue for inspiring young minds—students, faculty, and researchers alike—to view science and technology as vital tools in building stronger and more sustainable communities.
