Research Explores How Family Carers Use Communicationto Comfort Cancer Patients

The research titled “The Lived Experiences of Family Carers Using Comforting Language and Communication Strategies for Cancer Patients” explores how family carers use words and communication strategies to ease the emotional burdens of cancer patients. The study was co-authored by Antonina Rebato, Anna Liza C. Cerbo, Dennis Duran, Marie Anthonette Llamas, and Janilyn Mae Saban.

Using a phenomenological research design, the researchers gathered the experiences of 15 family carers to understand the comforting language and communication strategies they use when caring for cancer patients. The findings highlighted nurturing patient–carer relationships, offering verbal hope and resilience, and practicing therapeutic communication as essential aspects of compassionate care.

The study also emphasized patient empowerment, emotional support, and practical assistance. It identified the importance of sharing experiences with fellow carers, building resilient communities, and maintaining a compassionate presence throughout the cancer care journey.

The findings underscore that care extends beyond medical treatment. Words grounded in empathy, comfort, and understanding can serve as meaningful sources of strength for both family carers and cancer patients.

This research highlights the value of compassionate communication in supporting the emotional well-being of patients and strengthening the human connections that remain vital throughout the journey of cancer care.
